Barrel House Z, Weymouth, MA

We visited Barrel House Z a little while back, for our 150th visit! We went with all of Megan’s sisters as well two significant others. We have actually been back again since our first visit.


They are located in an industrial park In Weymouth, MA not too far from Megan’s family. They use old barrels for decoration everywhere, outside, leading into the tap room, and all over the walls. They have a decent size patio area, but since our visit was in the winter time, we stayed indoors.


Barrel House Z is a fairly new brewery that focuses on small batch, and mostly barrel aged beers. The brewery is run by the original head brewer of Harpoon. They have a partnership with Harpoon that we’ll get into a little more later.



They have 5 oz, 10 oz, and 16 oz pours of most of their beers. Some of the higher ABV beers are not available for 16 oz pours. A few of the beers they had two options- either barrel aged or ITB, ‘in the buff’ (not barrel aged). Others were just one or the other.  We tried a variety of pours of most of the stuff available, all barrel aged versions when available.


Bamboozled By Hops – IPA     6%
Not much aroma, light in body and not very hoppy with and odd, bitter finish. Grassy and bitter, not great, not barrel aged.



Townie – Irish Ale     8.4%
Aged 1 month in Bully Boy Whiskey Barrels
Smells like whiskey, pretty boozy in flavor but that flavor is complimented well by the base beer. This was a good beer, a pretty perfect blending of flavors, better than Mark expected it to be, and he took some home.


Zelato – coffee stout     8.8%
Aged 10 months in Rum Barrel
Kind of thin for a barrel aged stout. It had a good amount of rum flavor that blended well with the coffee flavor. Mark thought the coffee was strong on the nose but subtle in the flavoring at first, the rum dominated at first but you tasted more coffee as you drank it.



Quaker State – american oatmeal stout     10%
Aged 10 months in Double Oak Bourbon Barrels
This seemed a little thin as well, boozy with a lot of bourbon and oak flavors.

Adeline – stout     8.8%
Aged 1 month in American Whiskey Barrels
A good stout with the right about of barrel aging character, this was everyone’s favorite stout, and Mark’s, he bought some of this as well.



Sunny & 79 – ginned pilsner     6.2%
Aged in Tequila Barrels
The tequila flavor dominates this beer, but in a good way, not overwhelming.



Jess got the Sunny Radler, the Sunny & 79 pilsner mixed with Spindrift sparkling lemon seltzer. Jess just thought it was ok, she’s not much of a beer drinker and didn’t want anything else. Mark thought it was decent for what it was, a Radler.



Macanadas – mac and cheese filled empanadas


Mark was curious about the brewery set up and just had to ask. They have a very small 2 barrel system to brew most of their beer on. They have some 5 barrel fermenters so they can double batch into those. They also have some 20 barrel fermenters that they use. Harpoon will brew up a batch of beer for them and ship it over so Barrel House Z can ferment it. That’s how they achieve some of the volume so they can distribute while still being able to make fun, small batch, one off beers.

They have a pretty good sized tap room. A couple picnic tables on 1 side, a big long bar in the middle with several more big tables on the other side.

The Lone Wolfe Brewing Company, Wolfeboro NH


We stopped at The Lone Wolfe Brewing Company in Wolfeboro, NH on the way down from a visit to North Conway. They are a one man, one barrel nano brewery.

Witbier – 4.3% 19 IBU
Megan really liked this beer. Good spice flavor, light taste, and a tiny bit sweet.


Brown Ale – 5.6% 37 IBU
Pretty light, not much flavor to it.

Oatmeal Stout – 5.6% 30 IBU
Lighter in body than expected, good smell and smooth, good flavor.


Rye IPA – 5.6% 83 IBU
Reddish in color, good smell. Slightly red taste mixed with smooth IPA flavor, not super hoppy, tingled on Megan’s tongue.


It was a friendly environment, and we chatted with other people about breweries and this blog. Since we talked about the blog, they gave us, and everyone there at the time, and extra sample of something special, a Spruce Porter.


Spruce Porter – 12.5%
Blue spruce tips aged on vanilla bean and cinnamon. Has that aged flavor, Mark tasted vanilla bean the most with a hint of cinnamon with a strong smell of spruce tips.




They are planning to release bottled beer soon. The beers that are coming soon are their flagship beers, the ones they plan to bottle. They are just waiting for the labels to be approved. Hopefully we see them in stores soon- can’t wait to try what else they have to offer! Rumor has it… we will see them very soon!




This is the bar and serving area. Everything is made from recycled pallets, except the bar top, which is a cool live edge slab of wood. Even the floor is made from recycled pallets laid out in an interesting, repeating chevron patter. The lights over the bar were cool too.

This was a great place- the beer was good as well as the atmosphere. It is definitely a place to visit again- especially since we paid them a visit after they were open for just over 6 months! Some breweries don’t seem as well put together when open for this amount of time (or a lot longer), so we wish them the best with their future!


They are located in the Wolfeboro Marketplace. They are in the middle of the Marketplace, back from the main street. You can park out front on 109 or in the parking lot out back off of Mill Street.

The Seven Barrel Brewery


We stopped for a late lunch at the The Seven Barrel Brewery in West Lebanon, NH. We were on our way up to Vermont and stopped on the way. It is right at the border on NH and Vermont, right off of Interstate 89.



 “The 7Barrel was opened April 20, 1994 by renowned brewer Gregory J. Noonan. While Greg is no longer with us, his tradition lives on …. Under the ownership of Upper Valley locals since 2010, we here at the 7Barrel are focused on continuing to provide our customers with high quality fare, great craft beer, and the enjoyable and unique atmosphere people have come to expect from our establishment.”  



Queche Cream Ale – 4.5 % 14 IBU

Light but creamy flavor, smooth drinking. Good for the light end of the spectrum, we both liked this.

New Dublin Brown – 4.5% 20 IBU

Good roasted malty flavor, a touch nutty. Not bitter, easy to drink, we both liked it.




The Red #7 – 5%

Not a classic red style, so Megan drank it. A pleasant malt base and medium bitterness, not as hoppy as some reds. This is their most popular beer.




Pumpkin Ale Seasonal – 4.9%

Good, comforting pumpkin pie spice. Light style beer but strong pumpkin taste. Megan really liked this beer. Makes you want to cozy up with a pint, a fire and friends.




Champion Reserve IPA – 5%

Traditional style IPA, was a little bit warm though. More floral hops without much of a hoppy bite.




Wet Hopped Pale Ale Seasonal – 5%

Smooth hoppy flavor without hoppy bite. Hop forward with a good taste, we liked it better than the IPA.


Oatmeal Stout – 4.8%

Dry, traditional style irish stout. Mark thought it was a little roasty and toasty. Megan was hoping for a little more from it.



Conan the Destroyer Series: Imperial Coffee Stout – 8.3%

Not quite what we were hoping for. Megan didn’t think the flavors were bold or balanced enough. Mark liked it better than the Oatmeal Stout, but you could taste the higher alcohol content. Less roasty, hints of chocolate and coffee.



All gone!


We each ordered a pint after the sampler tray. Mark got the Wet Hopped Pale Ale and Megan got the Pumpkin Ale.

The food was good, but the French fries were a small portion considering you had to pay $2 extra to get fries.

Tributary Brewing Company, Kittery, ME


Tributary Brewing Company just opened at the beginning of September 2014. This brewery has been eagerly anticipated in the Seacoast region. The company is owned by a husband and wife team,  Galen and Tod Mott, that’s why everyone is so excited about this brewery.

Mark’s parents were up to visit and we were out and about, so we decided to stop in a Tributary and try some beers.



Our tasting:

Pumpkin Ale
Earthy taste with pumpkin spices but not too strong.

Oatmeal Stout
Nice smell – stouty caramel. A smooth beer with a good taste. Sheila doesn’t normally like dark beers but she actually liked this one.

Pale Ale
Good pale ale, subtle taste, smooth, a slightly fruity/ melony taste. It was dry hopped with citra and a few others, maybe that is the ‘little extra taste’.

Hop Harvest
Hoppy but balanced flavor. Mark was excited to try this wet hopped beer, and was happy, a good flavorful beer. Sheila liked it too.

One of bartenders came over to check on us to see if everything was good. We were able to ask a few questions at that point, which was perfect because it was Galen, one of the co-owners.

We got our sample flights at the bar, but went over to sit on a church pew and a few chairs around a coffee table.




They also have 3 picnic tables set up on the other side.




The bar can seat about 8 people.

They have a setup which is becoming common among micro brews. A cool atmosphere with plenty of seating where you can go and drink some good beer.




They have plenty of parking, and the Belle’s on Wheels food truck sets up every other weekend if you want to grab some food, you can bring it into the brewery if you want. They also have live music most weekends.


We will definitely be back, and we are excited to see what else will be coming out from this brewery.

Powder Keg Beer and Chili Festival, Exeter NH

100_0876This weekend, Mark and I went to the Powder Keg Beer and Chili Festival, located in Exeter NH. Outside the festival, was a small fall festival with a lot of children’s activities. It was nice to walk through to get to the Powder Keg.  Before entering the Powder Keg, we had our IDs checked, and received an “over 21” wristband. We were also given a map and list of what breweries were there. We then had our tickets ripped and entered. We were told to hang on to our tickets so we could come and go as we pleased. After we walked through the gate, we realized that we hadn’t been given glasses or tickets and realized the table to pick them up was to our right. We both received our glasses from a volunteer and started to walk away. We hadn’t walked too far when I realized my glass didn’t have tickets in it, but Mark’s did. I went back to the table, and at first they were uncertain what to do, but trusted that I was not given tickets and I received them. Thank goodness! We received 8 beer tickets and 5 food/chili tickets to start with; more were available for purchase.

  • Cinnful- Good flavor, 1st sip reminded me of redhots. Tart apples and cinnamon, good combo

Tuckerman Brewing Company, Conway NH

  • ALTitude- a double bock. Mark thought it was “pretty good.” I agreed

  • Sweet Action- A hopy cream ale.  Mark tried and enjoyed!
  • The Crisp- I tried, good!

Great Rhythm Brewing Company, Portsmouth

  • We were in line to try their beer, but noticed that they only had a pale ale (which I am not a huge fan of the style typically)

North Coast Brewing Company, Ft Bragg California

  • Le Merle- a Saison Belgian style Farmhouse Ale. Really good! Would be a drink I could have if I was going to sit back and enjoy one.
  • Pranqster- Belgian style unfiltered golden ale. Mark enjoyed

Prodigal Brewery, Effingham NH

  • Effinghamburgherbrau- a German lager. Mark liked, said it was very smooth. I didn’t like it- 1st sip nope! 2nd sip- not cold enough.

Berkshire Brewing Company,  South Deefield MA

  • Steel Rail Extra Pale Ale, a good light (Mark had)
  • Drayman’s Porter, yum good porter! Nice coffee notes.


  • Woodchuck Pumpkin- not amazing, but definitely drinkable. Started to really enjoy it ½ way through
  • Woodchuck Dry Hop Cellar Series- hops infused cider. Tastes like a beer-cider combo. Not bad.
  • ******Woodchuck’s tasting room is scheduled to open in May!!!!

Earth Eagle Brewings

  • Puca- curry, pumpkin porter. Nice flavor. Curry adds something different to it. Mark said it was a heavier pumpkin than we are used to- really good, a different flavor.
  • We were able to catch up with Butch, one of the brewers while we were there

Lagunitas, California

  • Little sumpin sumpin- Mark had, thought it would be more like a pale ale but it was more like an IPA

603 Brewery, Campton (soon to be Londonderry)

  • 18 Mile Ale- a rye. good balanced beer
  • 19th State- a red IPA.  Mark tried. When I asked him how it was, he said “I don’t know. Gone?!”

Woodstock Inn Brewery, North Woodstock, NH

  • Autumn Ale- Really really good! Different, nice spices. Mark said it reminded him of an Oktoberfest, only because he has nothing else to compare it to.

Uinta Brewing, Utah

  • Pumk’n Harvest- typical pumpkin beer


The Chili we tried:

  • Good amount of meat, not too spicy but a nice after spice. Mark- not anything crazy, a classic chili. Well balanced

Fast Eddies, Hampton NH

  • Good amount of meat. Good flavor, but either too watery or too oily, hard to tell

Stone Church, Newmarket NH100_0882

  • Good! Best so far! They add chips to the cup. Chili is a regular menu item. Option to add cheese, sour cream and other options. Spicy!

Tuckaway Tavern, Raymond NH100_0886

  • Topped with smoked cheddar. Nice smoked, almost BBQ flavor. It had a wicked spice to it, more of an after burn. After burn was ok because it meant they didn’t just add hot sauce to it, but a little too spicy for me! Needed some chips to eat it with or more cheese. Mark said it seemed almost pureed, it wasn’t chunky like many others. Most flavorful. If it was slightly less spicy it would be the best one yet!

  • Hatch Green Chili- more of a stew. Made in a traditional New Mexico style, with chili’s directly from New Mexico. Even had potatoes in it! Same type of spices, but different style. Really good!

  • Mark tried, he enjoyed it. Good consistency. Good be a bit spicier, but it was also at the end of the day

By 3pm, at least two of the vendors were out of chili. At least 2 vendors were out of beer. At 3:20, almost all of the vendors were out of chili. Point? Come early! It is a short day, only from 12-4, but you need to arrive early to enjoy all of the chili.

This is an event to go to. Just plan on eating your chili early!

Milly’s Tavern, Manchester NH

A brewpub on our list showed up on groupon?! Yes please. There was recently a group for Milly’s Tavern, located in Manchester NH. The groupon was for 1 tasting tray, 2 pints and an appetizer. Nice, inexpensive way to try out a new place and have/start dinner!


Milly’s Tavern is a brewpub, having at least 18 beers on tap at a time.


We went on a Saturday night, as we both had worked all day. When we arrived, we were uncertain of what to do, where to go. The bar and restaurant were set low, down a small flight of stairs. We looked around for a sign stating if we should wait to be seated or to seat ourselves… We must have looked confused, because the bartender came over and told us we could sit wherever we would like. We walked over to a high top table.

It took a few minutes for a waiter to acknowledge that we were there. Once he came over, we told him (as groupon tells you to), that we had the groupon. Bad move. More on that later.

Brew offerings

We were given a sheet of paper with six squares on it to write down which six beers we wanted to try. This was nice, because we had a choice. Many times a tasting tray is set for you, without giving you the option. We chose: Twisted Ale, Raspberry Hefeweizen, Pumpkin Ale, General John Stark Dark Porter, Manch-Vegas IPA, and the Oatmeal Stout.

Our three favorites were: Pumpkin Ale (much better than Sam Adam’s!), Oatmeal Stout (very smooth), and Twisted (tastes of iced tea, lemonade and beer). I didn’t make the connection until much later that the Twisted was similar to a Twisted Tea.


Mark ordered a Pumpkin Ale for his first pint, followed by an Oatmeal Stout. I chose the Twisted for both of mine.

Twisted Ale

We ordered chicken nachos for our appetizer. We didn’t get them loaded because we (well I) tend to pick off most of that, and it was a ton of stuff that would be added. They were really good, and were devoured.IMG_2618

Following the nachos, we ordered one of their nightly specials, a Buffalo BBQ Chicken Pizza. It was sooo good (and of course I forgot to take a picture of it). The crust was perfect- light but fluffy and crispy all at the same time.

It took awhile to be able to order more drinks, and to get the bill. At the end of our night there, a heavy metal battle of the bands started- made me laugh. The singer made more noises then singing or yelling. Was very… interesting.


Although sites like groupon suggest that you tell the server you have a groupon, I have found that you are better off not. Typically, when I or others I know have told a server that we have a groupon or other deal, they disregard the table, expecting that they will not be compensated appropriately. We left a tip based on the total bill- including what we would have paid had we have not had the groupon. Although the service was not good, we wanted to prove a point that just because someone has a groupon does not mean you will not be compensated appropriately. We responded to Groupon when asked how our visit was, and let them know.  We did not hear back.
