Dragonfly Farm & Winery, Stetson, ME

We recently visited Dragonfly Farm and Winery in Stetson, ME on our way up north to visit our friend Amanda.

They have a small tasting room, although it is much larger than their original. When the winery opened, the owners completed tastings in the breezeway of their home! They haven’t moved though- they just have a nice visiting room next door!

Now they have a nice little tasting house.

Dragonfly Farm and Winery makes mostly fruit wines. The use their own fruit, but if they need more, they get it from Wyman’s.

Fields out back where they grow grapes and fruit.

They also make grape wines, but those are on a rotating schedule due to the quickness the supply and quickness they run out.  They started making fruit wines to fill in the gaps and those became even more popular. They make 36 different types of wine.

The owners were mentored in Germany. They both still work full time while they operate the winery, which is crazy! Imagine working 80+ hours a week, every week?!

Our Tasting:

Berry Con2sion
Sweet and smooth up front. Made with 50% Blueberry and 50% Blackberry, fermented with French Oak.

Blackberry Bewitched
Blackberry flavor, not too sweet, a little too syrupy, maybe a touch too much blackberry for us.

Smells like raspberry jam, and tastes like raspberries.

Blueberry Bliss
Good blueberry flavor, a sweet desert wine.

Cranberry wine, taste like cranberry juice.

The woman who led our tasting was nice and gave us a fair amount of information about the winery. There was a large group that arrived just after us, so our tasting was quick, but still good. The winery had a nice feel to it, the hostesses were nice, and there were friendly people visiting as well.

The beginning of Bre’s Birthday Weekend! Deryl, Megan, Bre, Mark

 

 

 

We visited Federal Jack’s Restaurant and Brew Pub, located right on the water in Kennebunkport, Maine during Bre’s birthday weekend festivities. We were headed to Old Orchard Beach to camp for this weekend, and this was at a good stopping point. It was also a good time to try to throw Bre off, because she didn’t quite know the full plan of the weekend…

Federal Jack’s is one of Maine’s first brew pubs, and the birthplace of Shipyard Brewing Company’s award winning-line of ales. Federal Jack’s opened in 1992 by Fred Forsley and Alan Pugsley, with the opening of the Kennebunkport Brewing Company as well. Demand quickly increased, and in 1994, Shipyard Brewing Company was built Portland, Maine.

Sirius Summer Ale
Served with a lemon- delicious. Not a ton of flavor but a good summer beer.

 

Sunfish Wheat
Good flavor, grapefruit and peach. Smells like peach but tastes like grapefruit. Smell is a lot stronger than the taste.

 

Taint Town Pale Ale
Smooth, better than most pale ales.

 

Fuggles IPA
Not too crazy hoppy. Probably because it is single hopped with fuggles hops from England.

Newburyport Brewing Company, Newburyport, Mass- visit 41

Newburyport Brewing Company, located in Newburyport, Massachusetts has been open since 2012. It was the idea of Chris Webb & Bill Fisher, locals who like beer and great music. It is located in an industrial park and is fairly easy to find. The outside of the building is very distinctive.

Their tasting room is more than just a tasting room- you get the feeling that it is a place to go and hangout. Bill and Chris’s 8-piece funk band plays there, as well as other local bands. You can go in and have a tasting, or a pint. It is a nice, big room with a twelve seat bar, and two-twelve seat tables as well as a Foosball table, as well as plenty of space for their live music.

The Signature Beers

Plum Island Belgian White: good, citrus-y, with coriander. Unfiltered witbier. 5.4% alc

Newburyport Pale Ale: hoppier than a typical pale ale… almost an IPA. Slightly citrus-y with a light toasted sweet malt finish. I wasn’t feeling the hoppiness when we went- just one of those days. Mark enjoyed the hoppiness 5.5% alc

GreenHead IPA: a West Coast style IPA. Almost a double IPA 7.2% alc

On Rotation at the Time

Double IPA: almost has a candy/chocolaty/sweet caramel feel

Joppa Stout (1635): great mocha smell. Easy to drink stout. We went home with a growler of this

Mark enjoyed all of the beers, with the Plum Island Belgian White being his favorite. He enjoyed the Double IPA for the different flavor, but wasn’t sure how much he would be able to drink. Mark didn’t have a beer he disliked. I, on the other hand, was not in the hoppy mood.

The brewery only cans and kegs and started distributing about 8 months ago. They choose to use aluminum cans instead of glass bottles, for many reasons. Aluminum keeps the beer cooler longer, and can naturally protect beer from light and oxygen. Aluminum is more likely to be recycled than glass, and is easier to do so. 

The tastings are free (which is great for the amount that you get!!), and once you find one you enjoy you are encouraged to buy a pint and hang out. It is a very welcoming place and we would love to go back.

Oh, one other thing. They have really cute sweatshirts- with their logo as seen on the building. The last of the women’s sweatshirt, with the small logo across the front was purchased while we were there. It was cute, and didn’t scream BEER unless you were in the know 🙂 If we are able to go there again, one of those zippered sweatshirts will be going home with me.

Jewell Town Vineyard, South Hampton NH #44 (a little out of order)

100_1281We recently visited Jewell Towne Vineyard. We decided it was a great idea to go out during a snow storm, which in a way was true. Not that fun to get there (for me, although luckily Mark drove) but once we found Jewell Towne, we were the only ones there. We had just missed two car loads of people. IMG_0269
Jewell Towne is located in South Hampton, New Hampshire and is very close to the Massachusetts border. We were in New Hampshire, and drove through Massachusetts to get there. It is a little difficult to find, so pay attention to their directions as found on their website.100_1280  100_1279   100_1283  100_1282

Time Line:
1982- owners Peter and Brenda planed six grapevines
1990- Jewell Towne was established
1994- Jewell Towne Vineyards became a licensed commercial winery
1998- the winery was built, a 18th century reproduction

Facts:

  • Since they began, Peter has helped other wineries become established in the area, offering his knowledge of viticulture. Peter leads the way for the wine industry for New Hampshire. Peter has also helped with legislation in regards to the the winery industry.
  • Jewell Town is New Hampshire’s oldest winery
  • They have won over 150 medals in national and international competitions
  • Their upstairs art gallery features local artists, as well as Brenda’s work
  • They produce 6 thousand cases of wine every year
  • Their wine can be found in over 150 stores and restaurants in New Hampshire and Massachusetts, as well as at many Farmer’s Markets (Portsmouth, Concord, Greenland, Newburyport, Middleton and Gloucester)
  • Their tours as well as their tastings are FREE
  • You won’t find other fruits here- they produce only traditional style wines
  • They currently have 5 acres of grapevines
  • Many grapes they use are grown there, but some are contracted in (due to climate)

Aurore: hints of green apple, dry

Riesling: hints of honey and orange

Seyval 2012: “off dry” description fit well. Not too fruity, good plum flavor

Vignoles 2012: honey and lemon flavor. Off dry

Traminette: relative of Gewurztraminer. Had a touch of sweetness to it

Steuben: sweet rose with flavors of ripe strawberry and fresh pineapple. yum!

Leon Millot: smooth, off-dry. Light red wine with cherry and black raspberry flavors.

Sparkling Marechal Foch: unintentional (sparkling) wine. Festive flavor. Good for sangria.

Rhapsody in Blue: ice wine. Strong hints of honey. yum!

Everyone there was very friendly. The two women who were working in the tasting room, as well as Peter. It was one of the women’s first day there, but it didn’t show. All were very knowledgeable and friendly. Jewell Towne Vineyard would be a good place to go for those who know their wine, as well as those that are new to wine.

And the fun in between… Stonyfield Yogurt!

I recently went to Stonyfield Farm (located in Londonderry, New Hampshire) with BlogTweetNH. This was my first event with BlogTweetNH, but it defiantly won’t be my last. Upon arriving, we were met by Kristina and Chandra, who both work in the marketing department. Kristina and Chandra showed us a video-tour. Stonyfield no longer offers a typical tour, but the video-tour covered a lot, while still allowing us to stay cool. The video-tour covered how Stonyfield makes their yogurt (Stoneyfield Yogurt has 6 live cultures in it, while most other yogurt has only 2), organic dairy farming, how they use energy and produce energy (the sun plays a HUGE part) and other important topics.

Stonyfield began as a farming school, in Wilton NH in 1983. Samuel Kaymen and Gary Hirshberg opened the school together, and started to make yogurt for their own consumption. After determining that the yogurt was good enough to sell, they began to sell the yogurt to help raise funds for the school. After a few years, they determined that a successful yogurt company would make a bigger impact in the community than the school, and decided to run with it. Stonyfield moved to their current location, in Londonderry, NH in 1988. You can now find them everywhere- from grocery stores to colleges.

Stonyfield Yogurt started as two guys who did everything- milked the cows, made the yogurt, made sales calls and even deliveries. Now, they have grown to producing 1.5 MILLION SERVINGS PER DAY!!

After the video-tour was complete, Kristina and Chandra had us all introduce ourselves (and our blogs!) and answered any questions we had… Then came the tasty part!We all went into the yogurt room, and were told to grab a Greek yogurt and Blend yogurt from the fridge. I chose Greek Chocolate on the Bottom, and the Blackberry blend.

So delicious! To be honest, I had been afraid to try Greek yogurt- afraid that I wouldn’t like it. It was soo good! The Blackberry Blend was also delicious, and another type of yogurt I probably would not have chosen previously at the supermarket. In the past, I have not been too fond of yogurt that has fruit in it, but the Blend is perfect- you still know that there is fruit in it, it is just finely chopped.

While we were enjoying our Greek yogurt and Blend yogurt, we were told about a fairly new part of Stonyfield, Brown Cow. Brown Cow started in the 1970’s in New York and later moved to California. In 2003, Brown Cow was purchased by Stonyfield and became part of the Stonyfield family. Brown Cow recently introduced Cream Top Greek Desserts. We had the opportunity to try both varieties- Creamy Yogurt with Caramel on the Bottom and Chocolate Yogurt with Cherries on the Bottom. I am usually more of a chocolate person, but since I had just had the Greek Chocolate on the Bottom, I decided to try the Caramel. OMG. Amazing. The yogurt had more of a custard consistency, and when you dipped your spoon just to the bottom and grabbed some caramel- YUM! I was also able to try the Chocolate/Cherry, which was also good, but caramel would be my 1st choice.

Next up- Frozen Yogurt! The first two varieties we tried were the Greek OIKOS variety, Super Fruits and Honey. The Super Fruits was really good. Great combination of Pomegranate, Raspberry and Acai berry; very smooth. The Honey I wasn’t as fond of, but I think it was more so that the flavor was unexpected. Next was Blueberry, which was very true to flavor. IMG_3021[1] IMG_3022[1]

After trying three of their frozen yogurts, we were told to look in the fridges and see what else we wanted to try. Check out their fully stocked fridges!

We decided to try three more frozen yogurts, this time we tried the regular yogurts (not Greek). We tried Minty Chocolate Chip, which had a great and strong mint chocolate flavor. We also tried the Vanilla Fudge Swirl.

My favorite frozen yogurt was the Gotta Have Java- it is like eating a cold cup of the best cup of coffee you have ever had- SO GOOD!

Stonyfield also had really cool spoons- they were strong and durable, but surprisingly were made from recycled yogurt cups!

After we were done filling our faces, we each were given a goody bag. The bag itself is really cool- it is a ChicoBag, made from 7 recycled water bottles, and stuffs into itself so you can throw it in your bag. Also included was a Stonyfield pencil, Stonyfield Carabiner, Stonyfield lip balm, coupons and the Stonyfield Yogurt Cookbook. I can’t wait to try out a recipe from the cookbook! We were also each sent home with a 12 pack of the Brown Cow Cream Top Greek Desserts. IMG_3016[1]
